What is the Best LED Lighting Color Temperature?

What is color temperature?

color temperature: the temperature at which a blackbody emits radiant energy competent to evoke a color the same as that evoked by radiant energy from a given source (such as a lamp)

It is a comprehensive expression of the spectral characteristics of the lighting source that can be directly observed by the naked eye. The unit of measurement for color temperature is Kelvin, or k for short.

Color Temperature

In residential and commercial lighting, almost all fixtures have a color temperature between 2000K and 6500K.

In daily life, we divide color temperature into warm light, neutral light, and cool white.

Warm light, mainly containing red light. The range is about 2000k-3500k, creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, bringing warmth and intimacy.

Neutral light, red, green, and blue light are balanced. The range is generally 3500k-5000k. The soft light makes people feel happy, comfortable and peaceful.

Cool white, above 5000k, mainly contains blue light, giving people a harsh, cold feeling. The light source is close to natural light and has a bright feeling, which makes people concentrate and makes it difficult to fall asleep.

What is the optimal LED lighting color temperature?

I believe that through the above introduction, everyone can figure out why most residential applications (such as bedrooms or living rooms) use more warm light, while office clothing stores generally use cold light.

Not only because of the visual effects, but also because of some scientific basis.

Incandescent or warm LED lights promote the release of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate circadian rhythm (the body’s natural wake-sleep rhythm) and promotes sleepiness.

At night and at sunset, the blue and bright white lights disappear, lulling the body into sleep.

Fluorescent or cool LED lights, on the other hand, promote the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that typically makes people feel more alert.

This reaction is why sunlight can make people feel more awake and active, and why it’s so difficult to fall asleep after staring at a computer monitor for some time.

Therefore, any business that needs to make its customers feel comfortable will need to provide an environment with warm lighting in certain areas. For example, homes, hotels, jewelry stores, restaurants, etc.

When we talked about what kind of lighting is suitable for jewelry stores in this issue, we mentioned that it is best to choose warm light with a color temperature of 2700K to 3000K for gold jewelry. This is based on these comprehensive considerations.

Cold light is even more needed in any environment where productivity and high contrast are required. Such as offices, classrooms, living rooms, design studios, libraries, display windows, etc.

How to check the color temperature of the LED lamp you have?

Generally, the Kelvin rating will be printed on the lamp itself or on its packaging.

If it’s not on the bulb or packaging, or you’ve thrown away the packaging, just check the model number of the bulb. Search online based on the model and you should be able to find the color temperature.

The lower the Kelvin number, the more “yellow-orange” the hue of the white, while the higher the Kelvin number, the more bluish-luminous the hue.

Warm light, considered more like yellow light, has a color temperature of about 3000K to 3500K. A pure white light bulb has a higher Kelvin temperature, around 5000K.

Low CCT lights start out red, orange, then turn yellow and will go below the 4000K range. The word “warmth” to describe low CCT light may be a holdover from the feeling of burning an orange-toned fire or candle.

The same goes for cool white LEDs, which are more of a blue light around 5500K or higher, which has to do with the cool color association of blue tones.

For a pure white light look, you’ll want a color temperature between 4500K and 5500K, with 5000K being the sweet spot.
